Default Got my cow elk... finally.

After several attempts, on this particular herd in WMU 221, alot of map time, phone calls and knockin on doors, finally dropped the hammer on this nice cow elk. This herd is definatley hard to hunt due to all the posted land, land owners that say... Naw.... their kinda my pets, and they just wont co-operate. That all changed tonite. The gods of hunting, shone upon OL' Doc, and my good hunting partner, cousin Scooter, the rest is history. A special thanks to all the Land owners who welcomed me onto their land, to manage this herd of elk. It wasnt easy, but hunting on public land almost never is. Thankfully, all these Farmers, realize the need fer some type of herd management. Fixing countless fences, having bales ripped apart, it goes on & on. My hats off to all of them ... who can think outside the box.

Just a couple of pics:

Way to go Doc !! Especially since that draw hasn't been open very long. I grew up in that area and hunted it as a kid but it hasn't been until the last few years that i have seen any Elk and that was on the way to Gull lake to do some ice fishing.
I did see a set of Antlers this year from that zone and they looked more like a Red Stag than a Elk you see around here.

Thx fellers, Springer... you know what I'm talkin about. i've waited fer a few yrs, ... 999 a couple times, trust me on this one... these are yer typical farmland elk. Just try to stalk 'em. Spook 'em, cant touch 'em. Watch 'em all ya want,..... but no shooty. A little homework paid off fer me, finally after patiently planning, & waiting. Like I said... open fields, lots of posted land, lots of great land owners...and hey, sometimes.... just sometimes.... things work out.

Nice job - yup I've heard many people who don't hunt say "just come over and shoot 'em" .... somewhere things change when you become a predator

Sorry on the late reply Carolyn, been busy and such. I was shootin 30-06, 150 gr. Shot was close to 300 yrds.I am thinking 280 - 300,yrds. I dont range shoot a bunch, but I know my rifle. I was chasin this herd fer a week, Always could see 'em, but no shooty, thats how it goes sometimes.as fer the stalk, went through a farmers yard, then corals , then past the hired hand's house, crouched abit, crawled abit, not yer story to be in STALK Magazine, then... boom.. ( miss ) boom.. (miss) then boom... (thunk)... Then Thanks and Hi-5's. It was really sweet,... after following the herd where ya cant hunt, to being welcomed to hunt and make a stalk , and the land owner helpin gut and load my elk. Very cool.!!! Freezer... full.
