I didnt want to be like everybody else and bought an HTC Desire.
If you google smart phone comparisons the big three...I4, HTC Desire, and Samsung Galaxy are all pretty comparable.
All have a bizzillion apps that you can get, some have better cameras or video...
When I bought mine it was cheaper than a I4,alot easier to get,and only required a 1 year contract.
Very happy with the phone.
Younger kids tho might demand the coolness of the I4 cause thats what everybody else has....doesnt mean its a better phone!

Just got the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate and it is a good phone. Lots of apps and the color of the screen is fantastic. If I never give a penny to Steve Jobs I will be happy.

Maybe take into consideration, the cost to replace any particular phone that you may get on a contract. Accidents do happen as other parents have found out.
I talked to one young lady at the checkout last weekend. She did not like the Iphone and went with a Blackberry Curve. Pros and cons to all differrent makes.

Just picked up an HTC Desire from Telus. No charge with three year contract. Excellent promo plan being offered right now too! Student plan for $55. You don't have to be a student for this promo lol. It's been decades since I was last considered to be a "student".

If you don't need all the web based stuff and just need the phone to talk on avoid the web based ones. You have to charge them continually. My iphone does not last the day and I rarely use it. I find the 3G network painfully slow and access can be limited. I wish I never signed the 3 yr contract.

I have a BlackBerry Torch and like it just fine, but for a kid I would probably go with an iPhone or a good droid.

Just make sure you get unlimited anytime talk and text, and a decent data plan....the average teen sends and receives something in the neighbourhood of 5000 texts a month.

Yup. Blackberry's are really optimized for e-mail, which is why businesses love them, but also why kids aren't crazy about them. I just got my two sons Iphone 4's and my wife an LG droid. The droid can do most (not all) of the things the Iphone can, but was cheaper. If you are signing up for 2 or 3 year plans you can get a decent droid for free. An Iphone 4 will probably run you $170 or so on a 3 year plan.
AND GET HIM OR MAKE HIM GET A GOOD CASE! You do NOT want to have to replace a broken Iphone.
$55/month should get you plenty of data, unlimited texting, evenings and weekends at 6 p.m., free talk anywhere in Canada to 10 friends, and a bunch of regular minutes.

hahaha, I see it a little different
I have a motorola android and I would say that the iphone can do most (not all) that the android can, and cheaper I might add.

The iPhone is generally the most desired version and has the most prestige.
I would seriously reconsider buying a cellular phone.
The World Health Organization has determined that cellphones within 15 cm of one's head can literally microwave the brain and may cause cancer, tumours, and be carcinogenic to humans.
Listening to music with earbuds, even at moderate volumes, can cause a 25% hearing loss over 4 years.
Get him a nice scope or something. Don't iPhones cost like $600?

IPhone's, couldn't care about them, personally I think they suck. My friends have them and they all have had problems with them.
I got the HTC desire hd back in feb I think? Awseome phone, great screen/graphics, games and apps.
Only downside is that it's fairly heavy and big, but I'm glad I went with it.
But take a look at the HTC products, or any of the androids and forget about the Iphones..

iPhone 4 rules. Has best camera too. If one is afraid of microwaving one's brain, use the included earbud/mic headset. Paid $150 @ Rogers store
