Have you encountered a Grizzly Bear this fall? From recent threads, many of us have.

AO Members, please Post up your Grizzly Bear sightings from this fall.

Remember to report your Grizzly bear sightings to The Willmore Wilderness Foundation. The data will not only help in developing a more accurate count on Grizzly Bear populations, this information is also important to recreational land use decisions. The fewer G bears in Alberta, the tighter recreational access will become.

Yes.

My understanding is they are recording Grizzly Bear sightings from across the province.

Saw the coolest grizz ever man! She was out grazing across the valley from us about a click away from our camp. She was unbelievably silver, with a dark stripe up her spine and a dark undercarriage. Almost looked like a giant badger. Apparently, she had a pair of 2 year old cubs with her last fall with remarkably unique markings as well, and knows to stay away from camps and hunters. Real well behaved old girl by all reports. I have a crappy pic, but think my partner has a much better one and even some video. I'll post it once I get organized here.

Mine was mid-August, and as posted on other threads, here is a brief description.

1. Number of bear (s) - 2

2. Colour of bears - brown

3. What the bear was doing - activity - eating berries

4. Location of the bear - along main trail of upper Kananaskis lake, Southeast end

5. GPS co-ordinate if possible

6. Picture of the bear - video attached

7. Was there a collar or ear tag on the bear - no

We were on the main trail, on our way to Lawson Lake. This was fairly early in the morning, around 9:00am or so.

We didn't hike very far, and my wife noticed movement in the bush. We stopped, and that's where the video starts.

They were feeding on buffalo berries about 20 feet away, by the time we noticed her. She stood up, my bear spray came out, Duke our black lab puppy sat still (thankfully!) and she resumed eating. Her berry patch was too good to bother with us. The cub poked his head threw some bushes to have a look as well, and he stayed with mom.

The video quality isn't great, but my wife’s hand was pretty shakey (as was mine). You'll hear me tapping my hiking sticks, doing a few 'hey bears', and telling my wife we need to back away. You see the sow at the start of the video, and again at the end.

After a while, she moved farther into the bush and we felt it was safe to continue on, and by then 4 other people had started up the trail and ran into us. As a group, we hiked together for a few km's.

The sow and cub were fairly placid as they had a good food source, weren't startled by us, and were happy just doing what bears do. Other than a bit of interest at first, she couldn't be bothered with us.

Saw a big old boy on Sept 11th.

Location: west on 549 from Millarville, on the north side by the 312/406 border

Colour: Dark Brown

Number of bears: 1

Ear Tag or Collar: No ear tag

Activity: Was eating off the side of a cutline.

Anyone headed out there be carefull this bear was not scared of us at all. Had a stare down at 45 yards, my buddy holding the cow elk decoy more than likely didn't help. I wasn't going to dig through my pack to get the camera, but we did take some pics of tracks on the way out.

what about grizz tracks? We found some that were bigger and wider than my size 10 hunting boot. We never saw the bear he had been in the snow the day before.

Me and the father-in-law seen a good size grizz along Limestone creek. Me and the dogs came across a decent track on Wilson creek. There was also two grizz's spotted around the burtstick lake area. This might just be my personal oppion but the count on Grizzlys in Alberta must have been done by someone who count as high as my 3 year old daughter::confused:

I bumped into one on saturday , she was eating berries and when i came around the corner she just lifted her head looked at me and continued on eating !! it was actually pretty cool to see , she had no care in the world that I was there !! But 45 yards is a little close for my likings !!!

I saw a tank of a Grizzly in Ptolemy drainage. At first I thought it was sheep as it was in some bushes and then he stepped out of the bushes. He was the same color as a sheep, kinda cool to see, but once it started to snow and we lost visibility of him it was time to get out of dodge. One just never knows where they can show up once you lose sight of them.

Hey Guys,

Can't help with the location details for tracking, but cool day for my buddy on Friday. He was up in 406 on horseback and he saw (what he said) a HUGE grizzly. It was just walking up a trail they were on, and didn't give a care in the world that they were there. My buddy does a pile of hunting, and he has seen a lot of bears in his life (including Grizzlies). He sounded pretty impressed with size, and simply said he was "really happy not to be on foot that day!". :scared0018:

On the same day, he had a pack of 5 wolves coming up the trail behind them. As soon as they realized he noticed them, they scattered. He said that they came within about 20 yards. Pretty cool. (And before anyone starts in on it, I know what you're thinking! I've never seen a grizz in the wild and only one wolf, and he sees them both in one day? Believe it if you like, this guys not a liar...) I'm a little jealous, but I probably would have needed a change of pants seeing a grizz at close range.

3 weeks ago a big grizz boar. Eating in an oats field along side a herd of elk. (Okay about 150 yds off to one side) He had the mass of the biggest cow in the herd. Elk were mighty interested in keeping him in site while he paid no attention to the elk. Me 3/4 miles away looking through the binos.

Sunday past, grizz sow and two 2 year old cubs in the same oats field. Within 50 yds and the cubs running at me. (They thought I was an elk as I was hidden and bulging). Me no gun and no trees. I headed out on the run yelling at the bears (time to play dead only if they'd caught me). Thankfully they turned and headed out of the field.

1/2 hour later dead elk in same field. Me, somewhat excited deboning an elk with the wind blowing in the direction the bears went. Never saw them again.

Next time regardless of inconvenience, gun comes along.

We had a Grizz near our house two weeks ago. We live West of Violet Grove (near Drayton Valley). It was wandering through our neighbours pasture with his cattle, it didn't seem to even care about the cows. It was at least the same size or bigger than the biggest cow in the herd. It's front end was black, mid section was grizz brown, and the back end was black. It was quite a nice looking bear.

Saw a sow with cub on Sept 11th. Was glassing a cutblock approx a km away from the road just south of the second crossing of Wilkinson Creek on the Trunk road. (WMU 402)
Sow was pretty good size as was the cub though smaller. Brown with a very pronounced shoulder hump.
Thought she might keep coming toward the road but a couple of folks on loud dirt bikes zipped by and the noise got her attention as well. Bad day to not have a telephoto lense on!
Impressed the heck out of my fishing buddy from Maine!

My wife just had a run in with a big Grizzly today. We where out for opening day in 406 and at midday I went to check out the next cut block over, on my way back she calls me on the radio to say there is a big Grizzly looking at her. It buggered off though so all was well when I got back there. It also made us a little tense when we where dealing with a Mule deer buck I shot at sunset in the same place. The wife pulled guard duty while I dragged the bugger over ridge and back to the truck. We also called in a small bull moose to with in 25m of us first thing in the morning so all in all it was great first day hunting for my wife.

I must say, the berry crop this must have been a bumper crop ! Usually by this time of year I have an average of 7ish different G-bear pics, the most being 2 years ago at 13. This year I have only ran into 1????

Saw a sow and 3 cubs on the Forestry trunk road less than a mile south of the elk river turn off, couldn't get a pic but watched them for a few minutes before ma got nervous and went into the bush.

We seen a Boar Grizzly yesterday in the Hunmmingbird west of Rocky. Pretty good size bear, 6 inch front pad. We watched him from three hundred yards wandering up the creek. Snapped a couple of pictures, but not great photos, too far for my camera.

I ran into a mature boar this past weekend in the south tip of 521, a couple kms north of Grassy Lake. There were a couple of moose kills in the area, upwind of where he was. My assumption is he was coming in to those. Walked up behind me on a cutline @ about 35 yds. Scared the heck out of me but didn't really give me any grief. No visible tag or collar. No pics, video or GPS coordinates either.

Sept 14 we saw a big lone bear and fresh tracks of a sow and cub on a tributary of the Sulphur River. On Sept 15 a young g-bear forced us off the trail at the south end of Big Graves flats, and on Sept 16 we saw a sow and cub on another tributary of the Sulphur River. After seeing the way the young bear defended some roots he dug up, I know I don't want to encounter one that is defending something worth while.

We just seen a huge grizz in WMU 349 up the virginia hills road just west of the Source water dam North 10km roughly from the virginia hills complex

he I assume was sitting sunning himself in the the morning sun at approximately 9:30am

it has a dark face with a very blonde main i guess would be the best way to describe it . It had a light colored body and dark legs

we seen him on Thursday October 7

this other one is a little later it was seen last year by my brother on the little smokey river right at the grizzly junction bridge

The headwaters of the Old Man River on the sw corner of Pasque Mtn.
Grizzly sow and two second year cubs walked up on me snacking before heading out to hunt elk for the evening. They got to 35 meters before I scared them off. One of them was making a bawling and coughing sound several minutes before I saw them. At first I thought it was a cow because cattle use the area. All three were fat, they looked very round. Mom looked 450lb the cubs not too much smaller. Mom was dirty blond as was one other cub, but a single cub was almost white with large dark markings around the head and front portion of the body. I vacated the area asap.

I was riding my bike a couple weeks back and saw a sow with two cubs. I was on Hwy #40 about 3km west of the RR53A turnoff. No collars or tags. I tried to get some pics, but with the camera in the bag, and riding gloves on I wasn't quick enough.

Had run-ins with two bears, high in south -lost region of wmu 400 on Sept 18.
Actual physical sighting of seven footer at 30 yards; dark chocolate with grizzled mantle over shoulders and black legs.
Second bear is based on the tracks around my quad that same evening, while it was rummaging through my pack on the quad. This was definitely a smaller bear in the five foot range (four inch pads).

Me and 2 hunting partners walked into a grizzly sow with 2 cubs (2 years old), in the racehorse creek area of WMU402. The area exactly was at the bottom of the "B" level road where you cross the creek, over the bridge, behind the sour gas well, up in that mountain. I forgot the name of the mountain, however they were heading towards us as we came down off the mountain.

All three were a nice golden color, not much discoloration. The bears were grazing on the edge of the treeline, slowly heading up towards us. We walked in on them at around 50 yards. We slowly moved up the other side, over the hill and got out of there. There were no noticeable collars or tags, and no time to take a picture.

Wasted a moose hunt in 316 at stormy creek west of burnt timber ,1 large boar ,the son seen 1 young sow and the party camped by us seen 1 sow and 2 cubs in the same area... all different bears ..all in the first day and a half.
Too many grizz to relax when your stalking in and out of your stand in the dark not to mention hauling out a moose carcas in these conditions,.
Sure glad the grizz numbers are down ????,Ive hunted there for 15 years and its the first I have ever seen in there.

Saw a good size grizzly this morning crossing the road about 14km NW of Cadomin. No collar or tags. Last week my son and I were out quadding and saw maybe the same one along the rail tracks between Cadomin and Robb. Back in July I saw a small yearling grizzly on the goat creek trail between Banff and Canmore. Don't know if that one counts. In June my son and I quadding again saw a smaller grizzly drinking out of Luscar Creek a few km north of Cadomin.

This past weekend we saw one down just north of Waterton Park. It was the biggest Grizzly I have ever seen. A friend was down by Westcastle and seen three more grizzly bears this past week as well.

I am not a hunter, but my buddy and i spotted two grizzlies within a half hour of each other in the mercoal area near the mcleod river. on October 2nd
we were out fishing when one ran across in front of us.
It was huge, dark coloured and had silver/gold streaks running through the fur on its head.
the second one was just down the road from mercoal bridge on the way to cadomin and was more cinnamon-coloured (Swan Hills grizzly?)
There is so much coal mining activity around there now that they may be getting pushed out of their habitat

seen the biggest griz i've ever seen up in the 400 aswell on oct 16 north of waterton dark brown with slight grey back very high up in the rocks moving rocks around and i beleive eating berrys .i have pics of him but am having trouble posting them i could email them to someone if they could post for me. he moved around lots and acually got close enough to me and my hunting partner that we were getting a little nervous

was sheep hunting in 422 last week seen a sow with 2 cubs a little boar that chased them off the hill side and a huge boar one drainage over so that makes 5 oh and i only seen one legal ram

Oct. 22 in WMU 526. East of Hines Creek. North side of Sec. hwy 685. Good size boar. Got a good look at him from ~30-40m in the binos and there was not any visible ear tags or collars.

Had a run in with two different grizzlies in 438 this last week. One was a light colored bear probably 3 years old. We saw him in the ditch by the road one day and then came into camp the next day. The cook ran him off. The next night we had a bigger bear come in, 5 year old more than likely. He stuck around, bear bangers and flares wouldn't run him off. He came into camp three nights in a row. No pics unfortunately. The locals said there have been 5 bears around the town of Cadomin all summer.

This past weekend we saw one down just north of Waterton Park. It was the biggest Grizzly I have ever seen. A friend was down by Westcastle and seen three more grizzly bears this past week as well.

I went to pull my sheep camp today west of sundre today and a grizz had destoyed my wall tent. I left it about 7 days ago in perfect condition. there was no food in the tent but I did have a few cans of food about a hundred yards away that the bear never touched. Hahaha I guess my stove pipe smelled better

Oct 15/10 seen a sow grizzly with 3 cubs in the Syncline Creek drainage and on Oct 28/10 seen a boar grizzly just before dark hanging around the road by the Lost Creek emergency shelter in the the 400 zone. See numerous tracks on every back road trail that I have been on.

We spotted a young Grizzly on Saturday Nov 13/10 just a little west of Phyllis Lake (west of Caroline and South of Rocky Mtn. House). It looked like it was feeding on the far side of a private field and from the signs posted warning of a bear in the area, we assumed it must have been there for a while. We also ran into Fish and Wildlife who told us that there are supposed to be at least 15 Grizzly Bears in the Swan lake area that have been re-located there from around the province.

A quick summary from the thread.

Boars - 23
Sows - 21
Cubs - 30
Unidentified - 43

Total - 117

Some of these bears may have been duplicates, but I did take out the probable duplicate sightings. While the information being gathered by the Willmore Foundation is considered anecdotal, so is much of the Official Grizzly Bear Population Estimate, ie. population estimates based on road density, or estimated populations extrapolated from other areas, cubs not included in totals......

I'd say that considering how few people actually report their bear sightings, including members of this forum, the number of reported sightings in this thread is pretty impressive.

Keep on posting your sighting from 2010. We'll start a new thread for 2011.

Saw a nice Grizz today between the two bridges on Emberass river south of Robb this afternoon. He did not care that we were taking his picture just kept tearing away at the ground digging up roots.

"Near Hinton there was a report of a man hunting deer in his tree stand. A grizzly bear came sniffing around and caught his scent. The bear took off. About an hour later the man went to have his lunch and a bathroom break. Well instead of climbing down the tree stand he just went off the side of the tree stand—which was probably a smart choice on his part. He looked down and saw this big bear standing below him with its nose at his feet. He quickly started to stomp on his tree stand and yell. The bear dropped down and ran out of sight. The man quickly got off the stand and started walking to his truck about an hour away. He claimed this to be the longest hour of his life.

The survey indicates that there has been an increase of bears showing little fear of humans. It is evident that the bear population is steadily growing. Bears are adapting to new habitat and prey—donkeys, cows, and pigs and are getting more aggressive towards humans."

Many hunters and outdoors people wish they could help with government wildlife surveys. Here is our chance. The hard work of Basil Leonard and Jillian Houllihan has paid off. SRD is now accepting the "anecdotal" reports and data processing procedures used by the Willmore Foundation. These public bear sighting reports is being classified as a "traditional" source.
This data WILL be used to update the official Alberta Grizzly Bear Survey.
A proven healthy Grizzly Bear population will positively effect outdoor recreation such a trail use and hunting, ie. baiting Black Bears and Wolves.

The Willmore Foundation is still accepting Grizzly Bear sightings from 1020.

If you saw a Grizzly Bear in 2010, Please report your sightings. :)

It is being admitted in an official report but with spring black bear hunting banned in Ontario and the many incidents of predatory behavior by blacks in Ontario over the past few years is it not predictable how the grizz wil react when humans are no longer viewed as potential danger.
Maybe then we must be prey?

Seen 1 big bear in early july feeding on the north running ridge coming off the top of mt stearn in the willmore, dark in colour, he moved down into the bowl and then came up the side and the second he hit the top of the ridge we had just walked along he smelt us and turned and high-tailed it and didnt stop till he hit trees.
Seen another smaller blonde bear a couple miles southwest of beaverlodge in mid october eating oats, he had been around that area for quite a few months, feed was good I guess!
Heres two pics of the one i seen on stearn, you can just make him out in the second one, about mid near the bottom moving up the mountain, amazing how it only took him a matter of mere minutes to hit the top of the ridge, and then seconds to get back down it!

Hopefully outdoors people will report their G bear sightings. WHEN the official cencus shows there are more than 1000 bears in Alberta, we can teach the aggressive G bears that encounters with people may be LETHAL. ;)

theres so many grizzly bears north of edson hinton and south of edson hinton could go out and see a griizz anytime there every where ive been tracked and followed by two different grizzs just this year or comin into huntin camp.

YES! Jillian is following the thread. AO reports ARE helping the cause. But there needs to be enough detail to allow the report to be classify the sighting, perhaps confirm it as a distict bear. So please pass on the details as requested above as best you can.

I'm working with Jillian to get the word out and refine the reporting process. Lets all help by sharing our sightings.

Where did this happen and when? Report each individual encounter. If you saw the bear(s), describe them as best you can. Email the info to the survey.

Oh I thought that this thread had only been for the fall in 2010, if we are looking into other times of year I saw a big boar at chester lake in k-country back on july 23 2010. We were out hiking and the bear decided to come to the lake, disregarded the fact that there were a number of people (20+) in between it and the lake, it probably came within 20 yards of a lot of the people and did not show any fear of people, yelling and noise makers didn't phase it at all. Aside from that last year seeings as I ended up doing most of my hunting in the prairies this year all I saw was plenty of sign around YA-Ha Tinda (fresh tracks >12 hours as well as scat) and the same SW of fox creek in the spring.

WB, I guess the next step would be getting outdoorsmen to know that their sightings are very important information, and that they need to pass it along. If Joe Schmo sees a grizzly in his favorite hunting valley, and doesn’t know to report the sighting, chances are pretty slim that you and the rest of the grizzly people will know about it. The more outdoorsmen that are aware of the issue the better.

I have two ideas for you to get more people informed.
1. Have your peoples write a letter stating that sightings information is needed. Send it to the AFGA head office and the AFGA executive. Since the AFGA is in favor of re-introducing the grizzly hunt, and also believes that the current methods of populations data collection was a farce. I am sure that they will forward this information to the AFGA’s membership. Make sure that Doug Butler AFGA the Provencal Hunting Chair(who happens to be on our side on the grizzly issue) is aware of this. I am sure if he knows about it, he will make some reference to it in his hunting report at the 2011 AFGA Conference next month. I know that the grizzly issue is still one of Doug’s ceaseless battles.

2. How about getting in contact with the news/current issues columnist of an local outdoor publication…? I hear there is one pretty good one here in Alberta.

It is sponsored by the Alberta Fish and Game Association (AFGA). Wild Sheep Foundation: Alberta Chapter (WSF), and the Willmore Wilderness Foundation. Because of the partnership, we were able to advertise full-page and full-color ads in every issue of Alberta Bow Hunter’s Association (ABA), Alberta Trapper’s Association (ATA), and the Alberta Fish and Game Association (AFGA). We were able to advertise half-page full-color ads in Alberta Outdoorsmen Magazine. Our advertising campaign has proven to be positive, as we have had many more grizzly bear sightings this year.

Any other suggestions?
