Default Velvet Antlers

I was wondering if anyone knows how the heck an antler in velvet could be scored. Does the velvet have to be taken off first?

Why does it have to come off it it is scored as a velvet buck?
Do they strip it , then score it, then the owner gets the velvet put back On or have some imitation stuff put on the rack?

If the idea is that the antler is till growing , I guess I can see that .

Pope and young has a velvet category, b&c doesn't. To enter it in p&y, leave it on. If is to be entered in b&c, congratulations is in order, and then strip the velvet.

P&Y and SCI both have velvet categories , and you can leave it on,

That's what I thought, of course for B&C it would have to come off....

score it the same as without velvet. some of these guys got it right...some organizations have a velvet category and some dont.

jamie, ive seen a few fake velvet mounts and most of them looked pretty bad. i have seen a couple that were decent, and this last weekend, i got a close up view of cody robbins mule deer record in velvet....which was a replica. it looked amazing in the texture....but i thought it was a little darker than what it could have been. hard to tell from the original pictures, but i think the real deer was a bit darker than average too.

Same guy that did codys did my sheep as well. It's amazing you can't tell the difference between the two!

I am 95% sure there is a % deduction for velvet. You would score it as usual and then "x" percent is deducted. Don't scream at me because I am not 100% sure. I think I was told this years ago by a B&C scorer. I have taken several velvet whitetail when I lived in MB with the bow.

Sorry, I was wrong. Right from the B&C website.

VELVET ANTLERS
The Boone and Crockett Club does not accept antlers in “velvet” for entry into the Awards Programs and/or records books unless the velvet is removed before official measurements are made. Remnants of velvet are permissible as long as they do not affect any measurements

When measuring velvet covered antlers you can not compress the velvet with the measuring tape, and when measuring the points only measure to where the tip starts to round off.
