It sounds like they are pulling a few brands
Mountain Equipment Co-op says it will stop selling products from Vista Outdoor, bowing to pressure to distance itself from the sports and recreation company, which makes and distributes items including guns and ammunition, after last month's school shooting in Florida.
Vancouver-based MEC announced Thursday morning its stores will stop using the U.S. company as a supplier.
MEC has been selling Vista-owned brands including Bollé, Bushnell, CamelBak and Jimmy Styks for years, even before Vista acquired them.
I think this is a little over the top... MEC doesn't sell guns, and that's fine by me but dropping the other brands is taking it too far IMO.

"US"!!
WOW!! Pretty big generalization, there!!
And as stated earlier, MEC has some of the lowest priced outdoor gear on the planet and many name brands that are considered "The BEST" in their respective markets!!

I'm not an NDP voter.
I like fishing.
Got a fishing backpack from MEC that was cheaper than ANYWHERE else.
So I guess they cater to outdoorsmen as well.
Have fun!

Unless you are privy to information about MEC's decision on this subject?
The article states that some random people/members have asked MEC to stop supporting Vista. MEC has not agreed to do so as of yet.
Wait for the decision before you decide to lambaste the company...
|
did they not make a decision by saying
"The retailer said its existing inventory of Bushnell, CamelBak, Camp Chef, Jimmy Styks and Bolle gear will remain on its shelves until it is sold, but it has suspended further orders of the brands owned by Vista Outdoor"

Yes they did. Today or yesterday but not on the 26th when RavYak posted this.

Who cares what MEC does. No self respecting sportsman would be caught dead in one of their stores surrounded by hipster employees and customers who hate hunters, the military and anything to do with being a man. I've spent $0 at MEC during my lifetime, no loss at all.

For those who hunt and support MEC, I suggest you put #MEC on all your Instagram posts beside your trophy.
Let me know how that goes for you.

Makes one wonder if they are also going to curtail dealing with all the other companies guilty of the exact same "offense"?

MEC is not a hunting store. Big deal. Go somewhere else if y'all offended. I like it for lots of stuff. Mountain tents! Sleeping bags! Gear! Best price on Mountain House meals...................and lots of stuff you just can't get at Cabelas.
I haven't never seen a Company statement that indicates they are anti. Anti implies that they are opposed to "hunting". Have you ever seen direction from MEC Head Office that denounces hunting? Do they attempt to sabotage hunting? Do they attempt to create legislation in order to eliminate hunting opportunities? Just sayin', if they are anti they aren't doing a very god job of it lol...

To be fair here, Costco has the best price on mountain house meals. But who’s keeping track anyways

Sorry guys.. (Well some of you)
by supporting those who don't support us you are doing a disservice to yourself and the those young guys that follow us.
Be loyal to those that are loyal to you (Or at least try to be)
I am sure you can can get this stuff on line and don't need to shop at such a place.
You really need to protect what we have here or you will only have your self to blame.
So far this year we have lost Wholesale sports, Cabelas and BPS have combined. Your choices are friends are getting smaller but go ahead and buy your mountain house meals at a slight discount...

I think it might be worthwhile to send them the list and a petition for them to drop them all. Might be a good business model for them.
Of course they will likely just re-engage in their common practice of stealing R&D from all the other companies, manufacturing in Vietnam or Cambodia instead of China, and claiming the moral high ground....

I hope MEC cleans house on those connected to entities that don't meet their 'values'! They can start with shutting down their Victoria store - how can they continue to contribute their sh*t to a city without a sewage treatment system? Are they OK with raw sewage in our oceans? Then maybe shut down their Calgary store too, because much of their revenue must come from customers that work for those filthy oil & gas companies - how can MEC possibly make their profit through that connection? Does MEC SUPPORT PIPELINES by doing business with their minions? Who does MEC bank with - I'm sure that they have some environmentally questionable investments. Where are their clothing lines made? - off-shore sweatshops?
You get the idea. If they're going to dissociate themselves with a corporation that has other holdings they don't like, then they should review all of their relationships.

MEC bows to pressure from small special interest group.
MEC has allowed a small interest group with internet clout to control their buisness so they will stop doing buisness with Vista. Stand up for whats right or small interest groups on internet will take away your right to hunt and fish. It was small interest group that got grizzly hunting banned in BC. Stop shopping at MEC. Cancel your MEC membership and let them know why.

Interesting.
Letting go of Camelback and those other brands is not going to have a huge impact on MEC as other companies can and are filling that void easily. Letting go of Black Diamond (isn't Scarpa a connected brand?) would actually threaten their competitive ability to offer a comprehensive range of climbing and ski touring gear.

I wouldn't call the anti gun people a small interest group. They are much larger than the pro gun groups. MEC would rather face a boycott from the few gun people that rarely shop there than the huge group of granolas that are and have always been their target market and where they make their money. In fact their business will probably increase as more antis will look to support them because they voiced their opinion on this situation...

Hello AO readers
I have written to MEC today asking that after 37 years of membership in the co-op that they cancel my membership and return my $5.
I also commented on the MEC pPresident's ridiculous comments promulgated (of course) by what one of the other posters here calls the Canadian Brainwashing Corporation
I am not Facebook type of guy
Perhaps one of you who is, could start a "quit MEC" page
I am sure that there are plenty of readers here and on CGN who would step up
If MEC doesn't want us ****** 'em - I don't look good in yoga pants anyway

M E C has always been a haven for granolas, enviros and antis. Never spent a penny there. Never even set foot in one of their stores.

Well said! But now I'm confused, I don't have a gun and don't hunt, so guess I'm not a man? Oh wait, I've plenty of long stiff fly rods so I guess that's good enough? :sHa_shakes hout:

Just bought my new BD Jetforce avy pack from MEC.
It sure is a sweet piece of kit. And no questions asked/no hassle return policy. Can’t beat that.
Full week of beta next week, can’t hardly wait.

I email the CEO, David Labistour directly and told him what I thought of their weak willed decision to cave into the SJW crowd and their virtue signalling. And that my family and I will not step foot into their stores again.
