Sad Day. Last Great Canadian Bagel I Know is Gone
Well, I went to stop by the great canadian bagel in sherwood park today to see its gone. I only discovered it 4 years ago. I had thought they were all gone when I found that one. I would always swing by when in the area and buy a dozen bagels and a few tubs of cream cheese. It was a real treat for me. I really enjoyed their bagels and cream cheese. Safeway bagels are terrible.
Anyone got a good bagel shop?

Yeah. H&H Bagel in New York city. I can't remember what the Great Canadian tasted like now. Next time I go to Montreal, I'd like to try those ones over there.

Safeway used to make a half decent bagel, but after Sobeys bought them the bakery seemed to go to hell. The Costco ones are mediocre at best.

I prefer Montreal style bagels to New York style. A bit more dense and less sweet.

Hyper, two places in west end can meet your bagel fix, both likely better than Great Canadian…
Bon Ton Bakery - 149 st and 87 ave
Bliss baked Goods - 142st and 107 ave
Top drawer bagels.

I have driven by bliss all this week dropping the kids off at a summer camp. I will swing in tomorrow.
Bon Ton will have to wait its turn.
Thanks.

I still dream of B&A Bakery in Edmonton and their rum cones. Man they were yummy. Rum balls also.

I thought the H&H employees were still on strike?

Bliss Bakery makes a really good bagel but limited selection. No fancy cream cheeses either. I would definitely buy their bagels again. The bagels may be better than great canadian, but no fancy bagels or cream cheeses its not a replacement for me. If great canadian was still open i would go back there.

When I was in graduate school (1985-90) in Madison, Wisconsin, there was a bagel shop (Bagels Forever?) between the university farm and campus. We would often stop. I think bagels were 20 cents (baker's dozen for $2.40) each and a plump blister pack of cream cheese was maybe 15 cents. They were really good but if you ate more than about 2, your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) would just ache!
We also had a dairy science ice cream store about a 2 minute walk from our building. We had a couple of students that that part-time jobs in our lab and serving ice cream and we would get massive ice cream cones when one of those gals was serving.
Wow, time flies!

They had dill pickle cream cheese and zesty cheddar were among my favourites. They had several different flavours they blended in house.

In Calgary, St Lawrence Bagels off Memorial Drive, just west of Crowchild - is my favourite. Montreal style, wood fired, good variety. Get a bag of their toasted bagel 'chips' as well - great for soups & dips!
Their little vacuum packed smoked meat is awfully fine too!

Bagel Bar on 99th street across from Timber Town. All kinds of sweet and savoury bagels (plus some fancy cream cheese which they sell tubs of as well.)
