Hey, those ants aren't eating the aphids, they are protecting and farming them.

The aphids drink the plants juices which are very low in proteins, but very high in sugars. In order to get enough proteins, they excrete large volumes of honeydew (sugars) which the ants harvest from them.

Many ants and wasps have this relationship with homopterans (aphids, hopper bugs, buffalo bugs).

Ants evolved farming millions of years before we did. They also intentionally grow plants and fungus for harvest.

BUGS!

Thumbs up

Great pics, Shawn.
The quality of photos on this forum is certainly increasing lately; I love it!
Nice-looking rainbow.
Really like the dragonfly shots; but, that pic of the ant with his little aphid ranch is money, dude! Fantastic!
Keep it up...

Sweet pics, those will be cormorants, the biggest feathered enemy to fish. Theyre becoming a problem and nuisance bird.

Nice pics.

Why are you leaving, if you don't mind me asking?

I hope it is not just because of the criticism of a few. From what I remember, one of your first posts got you a good "reaming", but you apologized, learned from it and moved on. That's life.

I have put my foot in my mouth more than once, am often wrong (shhhhhhh, don't tell my wife), have learned to be more patient and understanding of others' views, and have learned to pick my battles, from this and other forums.

Thick skin is helpful, but not required.

We all need to be involved, or else we are divided and vulnerable to attack (from the outside). Personally, I would rather have another fisherman/hunter give me a hard time about something than some dim witted ignorant urbanite.

Hope you hang around.
