Rod holders for the new boat?
I'm going to put a few rod holders in my boat before the season opens and I was wondering what you guys would reccomend? Also I'm wondering where the best location to put a rod holder intended to be used by the opperator on a side console boat? I have just enough room to put one in front of my throttle lever but it would be pretty tight at full throttle. Maby a socket mounted one I could pull out when I'm not trolling?

I like the Folbe's, or Scotty tube type, something that is a quick release model. Not sure what kind of boat you have but I mount mine right beside me or in front of me on the cross member in the small boat
Folbe
I have an extension on this one
Scotty tube

Cal
I have the flush mount rod holder bases in my boat and really like them. You can mount them where ever you want and when you are not using them they are not in the way,,,

If your boat is used primarily for fishing, and you have some extra money, I would suggest a track mount system. That way you can place your rod holders where ever you want, whenever you want and as many as you want. You can even use them for down riggers.
Personally I use Scotty's as there build here in B.C., but there are lots of others out there that work very well.

Folbe all the way! I have used the Scottys but I much prefer the Folbe system.
I have a side console boat as well Cal, I don't think putting it I front of the throttle is the best spot. If your captains chair spins around, mount the rod holder behind the throttle about 24 inches. When you spin around, it is right there to grab when you get a strike.

I use flush mount Scotty's. Theory being a few fold - 1) I have a few mounts throughout my boat so I can use whatever mount is convenient for where I am at. 2) With the Scotty's, there are various types of rod holders and other accessories that can go into the mounts. 3) Relatively inexpensive for what they are. I would suggest making sure you have fishing a good number of times in your boat before punching the holes and putting in the mounts mind you, as I found it beneficial to really know where to mount the holders. Always watch for wires though when drilling. Thankfully that's not from a bad experience, just a nearly bad one.

Good advice, thanks guys! Bobalong, love your setup, unfortunatly I cant do that with my boat because of my gunnal design and my throttle placement.
Fisherman guy, I had concidered doing that but directly behind my throttle there is a long hatch, I dont know if I could mount a rod holder there without obstructing access to the hatch. Ditto for a rail system I think.
Krisrf. Realy good advise there. I think I'm going to mount a couple in the standard places on my boat, I'm thinking the two rear corners and one amidships on the passenger side, for the trickyer spots like by the captains chair and in the bow I'll do some experimenting with a clamp on before I drill any holes. Once again thanks for the help.

I use the scotty as well but I did see at Bass the other day a table full of scotty type holders 2 in a pack for 16 bucks.
Now that is a deal. Pick up 2 or 3 and place em at intervals through out the boat and you are good to go

No worries, thanks for the tip. I'll get some next time I go to Edmonton. I guess the next question is what type of Scotties do you guys reccomend and where in Edmonton is the best place to get them? I'll be using both baitcasters and spinning rods, can I use regular Power Locks or would somthing else be better?

The regular Power Locks will work with both Bait Casters and Spinning rods just fine, there're the ones I have. The Orca or Striker will be quicker for setting the hook and getting your fishing rod out of though. If your worried about the rod or holder getting in the way of your throttle perhaps a "Rod Holder Extender" (also sold by scotty) would solve that problem for you. Not trying to be pushy here, just my opinion, if you can afford it I would go to a track system. That way you can slide the rod holders where ever you want them as well as sonars, cup holders, etc. with out having to drill extra holes. My scotty just mounts to my track adapter then I can have my rod holders were ever I want them.
Good fishing.
