Default Help a rookie with a fishing spot? (Near Calgary)

Hello all,

So I've done it! I've bought a canoe and I am very excited to get it wet.

This weekend my wife and I plan on taking our daughter fishing and I am wondering if someone could recommend somewhere near calgary (within maybe an hour and a half?) that would be a good spot to drop the new canoe in the water and hopefully catch a nice Walleye or two.

We were at PCR last weekend which was great fun from shore but I really would like to find somewhere with the potential to catch something a little bigger than the fish at PCR.

I know folks are hesitant to give up their secret fishing holes, but maybe PM me with your semi-secret fishing holes? haha.

Thanks everyone! The help is really appreciated.

You could always go to glenmore res. The pike in there pull pretty well.

For bigger eyes you'll have to hit another res or a river.

I wouldn't take my family out in the canoe on the bigger res's.

Glenmore isn't a bad idea at all. For future reference (when I don't have the kid in the boat!) could you suggest another res or river near Calgary that has decent eye fishing?

Thanks for the feedback

Most of the walleye fisheries are 1hr+ drive from Calgary. You can find lots of threads on the forum with tons of info and get hints from the reg's ie where there are walleye limits. I don't target walleye much.

If you go to Glenmore make sure you familiarize yourself with all the by-laws (google search).

We learned while picking berries the other day that you are only permitted to enter or exit your boat at the 3 docks. Apparently, beaching your canoe on shore to pick berries is a sign of distress...

If you work the shorelines you will catch some pike.
