Thumbs up Another Trip Report - Diver and family igloo camping **PICS ADDED**

So decided to put up another trip report. Sick of all the controversy lately and thought a good ole fashioned outdoors thread is in order.

I'm on my iPad so pics will follow.

Spent the last two days at my brother in laws. And I promised my nephew we would winter camp at the acreage.

So day before yesterday we cheated and used the backhoe to build a mound of snow about 4.5' high and big enough to put an igloo on top. Then we shovelled the pond off by hand for a rink. Hadn't done that in years, since I lived on the farm. My back is killing me from the igloo and the rink, but felt like a kid again.

We normally build an 11' diameter igloo, but opted for a 9' because of the sugar snow here. You can use it, it takes twice the amount of time.

Spent a few hours yesterday in the cold working on it, the. Spent today in much nicer weather finishing it off. I'm in the house watching junior hockey, having a rye, while my wife prepares bedding.

My nephew is 8 and thinks this is awesome! Glad he'll have this memory of sleeping in an igloo with his nutty aunt and uncle and our lab duke.

Anyhow, pics to come. Have a great evening ya'll!

That's cool. I remember building forts when I was a kid... If there was enough snow. Tried to get Mom to let us sleep out there but never got anywhere.
Many times the neighbour kids and I slept out on the lawn with just a sleeping bag and pillows in the summer.

That's a pretty cool tool! It seems like you would have to leave the tool sit for a bit for a block to set, before you could move on to the next one, with the cold dry snow we have right now. How long do you leave it before you move to the next one?

All depends. The really bad stuff has to be slowly packed. Then sit for five minutes or so. Takes a loooong time with sugar snow.

Now... the pics....

The Three Stooges

Duke had his hands full with this mastiff. Played for three days straight. He's currently passed out in our bedroom groaning.

We also cleared off the pond, at no expense of labour, to have the youngin's be able to do some skating.

Finishing off

My nephew had a great time spending the night, although the snow seemed to be harder than last time I remember sleeping on it. I paid for not bringing my foamy thermarest, but temps stayed a few degrees above freezing inside, with outside temps around -12C.

All in all, some quality time spent outside, with family.

You never cease to amaze me with your pics AD. Looks like your back holds up better than mine ever would. The shape I am in, I wouldn't even dream of attempting the igloo. Did that years ago. My hat is off to you sir and thanks for posting the pics!

One of the cool things about igloos, is how quiet it is inside.

With just a single candle burning, and your own body heat / breath, it will stay right around the freezing mark all night.

There can be a wild storm outside, and you'd never even know. One trip, we put a tarp to seal the lower entrance, (kept the air hole in the side) we woke up to the neatest winter wonderland of about 6" of fresh snow. By the looks of the drifts, we slept through some wild winds. You'd never sleep that well in a windy condition in a tent.

The air hole will actually expand overnight just from your breath, so not too worried about getting bad air inside. (I always keep a shovel inside - just in case)

We had my nephew bundled up well, and the good thing was that the little bugger actually slept in. He had a blanket over his head and thought it was still night time at 9:30am thankfully!

Another neat thing, is that when you blow out the candle at night, there is still a lot of light coming in, moonlight and starlight will come through the snow (8" thick) and its a soft moonglow where you can see pretty much everything inside the igloo.

We went a little overkill with the base, once the tunnel in was dug, we needed to get the bunk bed ladder out of the trailer to get into the thing. (I was trapped inside building the dome until they tunnelled me out) It performed as a great cold well.

You know a man is confident in his penis size when he's willing to camp out in an igloo.

Thanks for posting the pics 'Diver. Yer not as bad as some complain.

I am painting my `73 boler trailer to look like an igloo. May I use your pic as a reference / model, so I get the art work done properly?

Thumbs up

Another great thread AD
Good thing that Matiff didn't decide to mark the side of the igloo though, he'd have melted a big hole in the side of it for sure
