I use a big bionic bucktail, one that glows in the dark and has a stinger. Put lake herring or anchovie on it, whatever the esso has at the time. Hit the bottom at around 100ft give or take 20, if nothing hits the bottom work your way up. Always works for me.
They are all over the place right now, from the bottom 100ft down to just under the ice.
Good Luck

just watch Brandonkop's Cold Lake Video thread and that pretty much is a step by step perfect guide.

You will need a heavy action rod and a reel that can hold 175 ft of line .... I like 15-20lb super line and a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader that's 15 ft long tied on. You need to use baits in the 1 oz range white or silver buck tails and tubes jigs are your best bet.

Lakers can be found anywhere in the water column but if you don't have a flasher your best bet is about 3-5 ft off bottom. Big ripping jigs then let sit still or have a nice light bounce until you feel a hit then its on.

Good luck
Don't grab them by the gills and take good care of them!!

Go on at the marina and fish straight out with the rest of the crowd or just look for lots of trucks, these are the common "tourist" spots. You'll catch fish. There's plenty of other spots where you'll be the only person fishing. I use a 42 inch heavy action rod with a Stradic ci4 3000 size reel and 20 pound suffix. I then tie a 15-20 pound fluorocarbon leader on with a swivel between two lines. Best hook is a 4 inch Berkeley tube jig with a 3/8 to 1/2 ounce head with the hook eye poking through half way up the tube and not pushed all the way up, it gives it a much wider drop. You can catch fish anywhere from 50 feet of water to 200, my most productive are from 65 to 110.

I've used the cold laker killers from Wholesale sports. Just a heavy white tube jig with stinger hook lower than treble.

1) Buzz bombs tipped with smelt.

2) Big white tube jig tipped with smelt (add a stinger)

3) Mainline to dodger (flasher) then a few feet to a lure (kastmaster, jig head etc... tipped with smelt). Let this flutter down (check for tangles every once in a while). attracts allot of attention.

4) smelt tipped with a smelt on a smelt (try tipping with smelt)

It used to be that a polar bear jig worked good. It is 1/2 to 1 oz. jig head with whitetail buck tail hair. The white hair only.

Here is the Cold Lake Special tube jiggs in 1 oz .. i used at Moose Lake BC and they work great ..

Remember they are eatting Cisco's and Lake Whitefish so hooks that look close will work .. some like Williams Worbler in the Whitefish.. mine are hooks with the bleeding gills not Williams

Big Lakers eat Big Fish imho

Food for Thought

So far I haven't found a hook that hasn't worked. Find the spots and It doesn't matter. Its all about the presentation.

What are you guys finding for presentation techniques that work.

I found I was getting hits on the retrieve but not on the jigging. Any tips for speed, etc.

Seems to depend on the mood they are in. Some days it doesn't matter. Other days a short three inch lift and drop off the bottom and then let it sit and watch your line. I always try one thing and after 5-10 minute with no action try something else. Don't be one of those guys that punches 10 holes after 10 minutes without a bite...If the lakers were there the day before...

Default Lakers

Use a 1 or 1 1/2 oz. jib with a white head and a inch wide slice of whitefish (skin on). Cut the whitefish, like a salmon steak and then cut the steak in two halves splitting the back bone (this keeps the bait on the jig better)
