Late season ice info for Cold Lake and Slave Lake?

Just planning a late season trip for the kids and a few friends. Just curious how late in the year guys SAFELY drive on the ice. (Been involved in way to many 'close calls' growing up at Gull to put my kids on ice with 3" water on top!)

usually pretty safe at cold lake to fish right untill the last day of the season, just depents how the weather is doing then.
