Default Can I shoot loose cattle on crown land? (Legally)

I ran into a herd of cattle in the middle of no where
They are at least 30km from the nearest place they may have broke free.

Anyway, can I shoot one ??? Is it Legal?

It's either me or the wolves that get them

You're kidding right? Those are property of someone so no, you can't just randomly shoot cows for no reason.

Why not?? My dog gets out runs into the neighbours 1/4 and gets shot. Why is it any different with cows?

Because your dog is on private land where its not supposed to be, these cattle are on crown land because the guy who owns them has grazing rights. Is that a serious argument?

The op said they were on crown not grazing lease. That land is as much mine as it is yours and the cow owners. I don't want someones cow tearing up Albertan's land.

For the record I would NOT shoot them tho.

Cows don't usually sleep in your bed with you.

No, you cannot shoot cattle on crown land. Refer to the Stray Animals Act for more details.

I'm curious... Is this a serious thread or is somebody trolling?

They have grazing rights on crown land. I elk hunted in a grazing area last fall, however the cattle owner took them out before season opened to avoid brainiacs from shooting them... They don't destroy the land by the way. Quads destroy the land, oil companies destroy the land...cattle do not.

I agree quads and oil do there fair share. I have seen cows tear apart trout streams so it looks like the side of the moon. No green growth and craters up and down the banks. Since when can a cattle producer just go and drop his cows off in crown land?? never heard of this.

There are many grazing leases on crown land. My guess is the OP was on crown land where there was a grazing lease and did not know. Not all cattle are kept in fenced leases either, there are still guys who have to wrangle them on leases as described above. Either way it is not legal to shoot them, and I'm scared that this was even a question.

OP pretty sure you are new to the woods or a troll.

Their are grazing leases in some pretty remote areas of crown land. The farmer knows where his cows are and they are allowed to be there. If you want to shoot one I hope you've taken a look at beef prices lately, cause your buying a cow.

Please surrender your firearms before you add to the valid reasons people have to hate hunters. There is already enough idiots out there making us all look bad.

It's just a question!

Some of you need to relax, I did not say I shot one
I was curious to the rules is all. So I thought this would be
A good place to get educated
How does this question make me a poor outdoorsman?

It saddens me that many of you wake up ****ed off at the world
And want to pick a fight. I am thankful I am not like you!

FTR
It's not a grazing lease, they are a long way from home
I have my doubts the owner will find them
Easy meal for the wolves I guess.

No you cannot shoot them. It's against the law. Now, did you get a brand so that the owner could be notified?

Call ESRD and let them know you found some cattle where YOU feel they shouldn't be....if they aren't supposed to be there then they will look into it.

Were they branded or tagged?

Have you been an Ab resident long? Hope your not a graduate from the first time hunters course and have to ask a question like this...I know farmers that have cattle shot every year never could figure out who would do this...not so much any more

You feel these cows are lost and will die if nothing is done and the first thing you do is try to find out if you can shoot one? These animals are worth thousand of dollars to somebody.
Can you really not see the problem here?

There is very very little crown land that is not leased by cattle producers to run cows in the summer months. How do you "know" it's not a grazing lease?

Okay. You got me. No way this can be real. Good one. Lol. Why not just start a thread about grazing crown land if that's the discussion you wanted to start?
