Whitefish Spawn

Didn't realize it was the whitefish spawn right now until an older fellow mentioned it to me out on the ice yesterday, indicating that's why they weren't actively feeding/interested in our presentations.

Did some research last and found out it is indeed their spawning time, but all indications are that they should be actively feeding and more aggressive than normal.

I started with the camera and the site fished down the hole most of the day, tons of whites around just not interested or cruising by. Lots of big groups flying by together. One weak take on the day and that was it.

Anyone have any experience pertaining to whitefish at this time of the year?

See any burbs chasing them around? I thought they had a relationship where they harass each other during spawning. From your experience did you see anything like that?

During the spawn change your hook lots until you find what they like. I've had my best luck with Russian hooks in florescent orange or green, and small Russian hooks in silver.

Yes to changing your hook Cory ..got 2 yesterday saw 11 ..one was 4#6 and got 3 out of 5 today biggest 4# .. I like wireworm too brass and or yellow or red .. I don't use bait.. these ones out here will spawn up too the New Year and are full of eggs

Had a burb hit a tip up a ways out, didn't see any others in the area.

Just the man I was hoping for, tried a variety if lures for em, a handful of different colored wire worms, some tipped with maggots, bare, smelt. About 4 or 5 of my smallest jigging spoons, octopus hooked tipped with maggots, and even stuck my hand down the hole and grabbed a couple boatmen to stick on one octopus hook.

Saw over 100+ on the day, and only the one that was moderately interested.

Did some slower presentations, some with a bit more jigging, and just had them fly on by.

Was a slightly frustrating day to say the least

move into about 5 to 6 feet and try they will be more active in closer to shore and try middle water column ..watch for that interested look or all out attack..

I use a back man type of motion in my presentation

Good luck if you use a Middle Tear drop or bigger and flutter it down too them it helps
