Default Sks bulk ammo

I'm new to the sks platform and I recently purchased some bulk ammo from wholesale. The kind with stripper clips. Anyways, is the bulk ammo generally what they call corrosive ammo? Or is it something else. I shot some today and it had a nasty smell compared to my normal rifles.

Default corrosive

Hit up google/youtube and search "nail test corrosive ammo" . The bottom line is that you need to assume it is all corrosive ammo unless you personally verify otherwise. Beware of one Calgary dealer that sells corrosive as noncorrosive and at noncorrosive prices.

Default ammo

Try Canadian Tire South. It's the first place I stop whenever I am in town. The 7.62 hunting rounds are not that hard to find and they likely have some.

Canadaammo has some non-corrosive norinco ammo right now. Better deal compared to WholeSale I think.

Here is the link.

Mexican match your hunting rounds, don't worry about corrosive ammo so much, your important parts won't fall off within a month.

X2 on Canada ammo.com except this link takes you to full metal jacket (fmj),,, what you would rather get is hollow point (hp) rounds for hunting. Is non-corrosive too.

Really.

I've shot corrosive through my sks, didn't clean it for about a week. When I finally did, no rust to be found. Clean it after shooting corrosive, but don't lose sleep over it. Not as big a deal as some let on. Unless you own a Yugoslavian version without a chrome lined barrel.

Crome lined didn't come out till 51??? The 49 and 50' s still do fine with out a CL bore. You will notice more corrosion in humid climates, as it is really the salt residue left over from primers/ powders that attract moister and rust.. Either way no need the worry about it, clean it when you can, and if you use your SKS as a back up canoe paddle, well, it cleans itself lol

I've read that it's "corrosive" because after oxidation, the powder produces hydrophillic salts. Water plus electrolyte means corrosion of course, but I wonder how much our dry climate would affect the corrosion rates.

EDIT: whoops, read everything up until the last post. My bad. Has already been said.

I never cleaned mine once for a few weeks after shooting corrosive and it looked like my rifle had severe cancer everywhere. Took forever to get it back in shape.

It's an sks. Don't waste your time cleaning it. Just buy a new one.

Not the case for the Czech stuff the OP has, that is the dirtiest ammo I have ever shot in my life. It will absolutely rust your gun out in a short amount of time. I found the Chinese and Bulgarian to be not nearly as corrosive as the Czech ammo.
I would just clean it every time you shoot IMO, but it's your gun to decide how long you want it to last.

As for ammo: best deals I always find at Tradex. Free shipping too!
Treat all ammo as corrosive, except when you are buying hunting rounds.
The cleaning process is very easy: take e gun apart, put all small parts into the sink with a hot hot water and dish soap. Take the barrel and run the hot tap water for 5 min thru the action down to the sink, then run few patches thru it and finish with a good gun oil - I like Ballistol. That is it. Remember, SKS doesn't need much oil at all, few drops on a trigger assembly and lube the barrel. Few drops on a bolt assembly sides and bolt itself. That's it!

this is right.

i have the same czech ammo, and i didnt clean my gun well enough in the gas piston area, and a day later the gas piston was rusted, and seized to the tube. it took a considerable amount of force to free the piston. i then super cleaned the whole gun again and after 2 months of sitting, the piston moves very easily.

I hear the HP ammo isn't really that good at expansion. I'm not sure I would trust it for hunting, but great for plinking.

Running corrosive ammo isn't all doom and gloom...just a patch or two trough the barel, has system and action and you are good to go...

The corrosive component is in the priming compound the Commies use. Western powers switched long ago .

Corrosive primers use stable, long-lived explosives that generate corrosive residues in a gun, usually metallic oxides, which, when exposed to moisture, form hydroxides.
