Default Sheriff's absorbing CVEB, next too follow...

Assuming it's not common knowledge. Just thought a few of you might think it interesting. Alberta gov in talks to have Sheriff's also absorb f&w and conservation. The idea is to have the state trooper idea. Wouldn't be surprised if corrections was absorbed later on aswell.

That has been a long term goal for Alberta to do. Good bad or indifferent. It will make a lot of people unhappy, a lot of people happy and lots of others don't care.
Someone will get a promotion out of it.
Someone else will get fired
Someone else will get laid off
And others will get hired.
For those in the front line they will continue to work and do what they do now. Maybe with a few more duties or even a few less. Either way they will still do what they were trained to do.

Thumbs down

Alberta Traffic Sheriffs amalgamated with Commercial Motor Vehicles a number of months ago. CMV officers will eventually be armed and they will share a common uniform.

The Alberta Sheriff management want to raid the Alberta Victims of Crime fund to pay for this expansionism. The Alberta Victims of Crime fund is bankrolled mainly by the surcharge on all violation tickets, which I believe, just increased to 15%.

Some will be justifiably outraged as this fund is meant to compensate those injured, or, otherwise impacted by criminals.

I think conservation and fish and wildlife is one and the same.

regarding combining conservation and the Sherriff's office (or some other agency) - That's the problem right there - anytime you consolidate your focus drifts to where the resources are needed and/or what directives the superiors are giving the officers.

I'd hate to loose the conservation part and focus and I'd rather see a dedicated force focusing on that as their primary directive.

I believe State Troopers and Sheriffs do not handle conservation work in most jurisdictions. Most of them seem to have conservation officers who, instead, back up other LEOs only when needed doing other law enforcement actions - but that's the exception to the rule instead of the directive and primary focus.

My 2 cents on the matter anyways.

I know few of these guys across northern Alberta and giving them a gun would be down right scary. The power trip this would give them would be insane.

Hopefully someone who knows for certain will chime in, but I think that F and W officers are already working under the Solicitor General and have been for a few years.

Yes F&W Officers have been under SolGen for many years. CO's were under SolGen until earlier this year when they transferred to the Environmental Enforcement Branch of AEP.

You kinda just said what I did only in longer form. Combining the two will possibly give you enforcement but not likely the conservation side of it.

Maybe some cool shiny badges, jackets, coffee cups and stuff we get to pay for with our tax dollars too .......... in exchange for watered down services.

I am not a fan.

Hopefully I'm wrong ......... wouldn't be the first time

Id like to see where this news came from.

Enforcement services have been migrating over to Sol Gen for years. Makes sense.

You saying F+W trucks are gonna say Sheriff on the side?

Won't be long until we have our own Alberta Rangers instead of the RCMP. Hopefully most of the RCMP front line guys convert over.
