What is your definition of long range? Is the gun to be used for target shooting,or for hunting?

my vote is for a .338Lapua AI from ATRS... Nesika action, macmillan a5 stock, mike rock bbl, topped with a 8x32x56mm nightforce...... Shooting 300gr smks at 3000fps. They shoot ridiculously good.....Excellent range, easy to reload for. Because of the AI should, brass lasts a LOOOONG time.

Don't know to much about guns. I now hunt with a bow and arrow. But when I did hunt with a rifle, I kind of took a particular interest in ballistics.

The one that comes to mind right off hand is the .338 Lapua. It was said to hold windage better than other smaller sniper calibers (i think it is also chambered in .308) The .338 Lapua used a .416 rigby case and was fairly flat out to 1200 yards. Now the military sniper rifles has switched over to the .50BMG i think.

I heard since then they have developed a .338 Lapua magnum. Some manufacturers supposedly have made them lighter than a standard 300win mag.

If I was to go long range, I think you pretty much get what you pay for, and I think this thing is going to cost a few bucks.

You asked for the ULTIMATE long range rifle!!

I think this should cover it nicely.

Default Savage

http://www.savagearms.com/12Varminter.htm

Not sure that I'd say this was the ultimate long range gun...but at just a hair over 1000bucks It is reasonably priced. I was thinking of getting one in 300wsm. Heavy rifle at 10lbs...but...

Throw a 6.5-20X50 zeiss conquest on it and load it up with 180gr accubonds and Bob's your uncle.

Like I said...not really an ULTIMATE set up...but I think it would be a good set up for a fairly moderate price.

Make sure you let us know what you decide on.

oh lol hah ha hah sorry im not laughing at you but all the guys suggesting 3-5000 dollar guns when you just need to get urself to whole sale sports and go to the gun counter and buy urself a Savage model 111 in 7mm rem mag or 300 Win Mag and any bullets you want will go straight as an arrow out to 300 yards. If you want to reload great bullets then I advise choosing Berger hunting VLD's if you can ever find them in stock. And pick a ballistic Reticle scope if you want to go past 300 yards. That is my current setup good to 700 meters (780 yrds)

That Rifle I suggested comes with a decent 3 - 9 variable magnification scope for $460. You cant beat that. And they are very well made guns in my opinion. A great place to start with any big gun enthusiast but really for just 100 yards you can use any gun you want above the 22 caliber. 243 and 270 comes to mind for the smaller side but just as good. 338 is better if you want to seriously hunt out to 1000 yards but to get good enough at the range expect to go through a thousand bullets and months at the range.

Good luck out there

One of my Long Range Rifles is a 30-378 Weatherby Mag.
The Other Being a HS Precision in a .338 Lapua.
The .338 I just bought this summer. I havent played with it enough
to be confident at the range I normaly shoot the Weatherby to.
...but all Indications are the .338 will be Increadible at the 1000 Yard Mark.
The Weatherby so far is Just as Accurate as my Lapua out to 500 Yard's,
As With any Long Range Shooting it's What your Comfortable Shooting With.
If you Dont Like Recoil, it may be hard to shoot these Rifles accuratly.
It's all About the Practise, Bullet Selection and Scope Choice.
In my Opinion the Scope is the Number 1 Thing not to Cheap out on..
Good Luck

That's an awesome gun TangoKilo! What's the recoil like on that? Also, what glass do you have on top?
