Default Tips for buying a line counter reel

It's the dead middle of winter and here I am already thinking of open water .

I will be spending many more days on Kootenay Lake this spring and I want to give myself a decent chance at some Gerards. My plan is to start off with a dipsy diver rig or lead core, and maybe progress to down riggers.

I know I'll need my first line counting reel and appropriate rod to go along with it.

My question is what qualities and what brands should I consider?
Also, what should I stay away from?
Thanks folks!

PS. If someone has a nice used reel and/or rod that they are looking to sell I might be interested.
