Smile Sako 85 bavarian?

Looking to upgrade to a new rifle and really loved sakos Bavarian model. I'm just very optimistic about the calibre. I'm looking for a good calibre for long range and to hunt big game like deer, moose and elk. I had my eyes set on 7mm rem mag or .338.

Any suggestions on this model and calibre choice?

Any thing from 270WSM , 30-06, 300WSM ,7MM rem Mag, 300 win Mag will work fine. I beleive they are all available in the Bavarian Sako.

As Leo mentioned all good calibers. 270WSM, 300WSM and 300WM would be my pics. But since you said 7mmRM, go with that one. Shoot 160gr Accubonds or TTSX's and you are good-to0go in Alberta!!!

I love my Sako m75 rifles. Bought my first as my first new rifle in 1997 (m75ss 300WM and kept on collecting)

All good suggestions and great gun really sweet looking. I might caution you that a stainless gun in synthetic or laminate might be better suited to last longer, a wood and blued barrel will get dinged up and rusted quite easily. Your a young dude and I'm sure a quality rifle like that will get used for years and years.

Just some food for thought..... Oh yeah and a 7 mm will serve you just perfectly!!!

In 7mm rem mag you could drop down to the 140 ttsx and be good anywhere.

Couple points to ponder on this one.

Since you've already got an 06 the 7mm will definately fly flatter, and hit a little harder out at further distance, but you will need to remember two holdovers, or................................................ .........

Since you've already got an 06, the 338 will have about the same trajectory as you 06, but hit much harder. You would pretty much only need to remember the same hold overs for both rifles at distance.

You might want to read this thread and buy a ticket ( just to support the cause though, as my tickets are the winners )

For two grand, you'd be better off with a Cooper. You could have the LOP adjusted right from the factory too, and have an adjustable cheekpiece put in after market.

Never saw the point of a Schnabel front end (especially with a sling anchor point underneath the rifle), or iron leaf sights on a 7mm or 300wm. But style and taste is a fickle thing I suppose. If I could get a new one for 5 bucks I'd probably go with a .338 in a 24-inch barrel.

I believe you can get zastva's in full wood stocks and apparently their prices are easier to swallow.

I think tradex may sell them.

The MK LK 70 mannlicher comes in 7mm

Naw, he was looking at a 7 or a 338. Which are two completely different beasts. So what he really wants is a Cooper in 280AI. For 2000 bucks.

I suppose. But the 338-06 is like a loopy Howitzer whereas the 280AI is more like an 88mm. 280AI is what Cooper's all about. Just like .338LM is what Sako TRG is all about, or 300wm is what Browning's all about.

A sako bavarian is more 'cult'. Sorta like Goth chicks or a back yard full of Corvairs.

I dont know what you mean by 280AI is what coopers all about? Its just one of many great cartridges.

I personally think the sako bavarian is better looking then cooper rifles, except for the custom/western classic coopers, aswell the bavarians are just as accurate as a cooper rifle.

Nice enough rifles, especially for the price but a mannlicher style 7mm RM?
19 or 20" barrel on that, most Euro made mannlicher styles are? If thats the case you will end up with a very loud rifle that doesnt give you much of the advantages of the big magnum powder capacity. 7mm Rem mag only really starts to perform as it should with a 24" tube. You would be better off with the short full stock rifle in 30-06, .308 or 7x64.

That bavarian is one sweet rifle. If it shoots as good as it looks you will have yourself a rifle that will give you years of service. might want to check out the weatherby mark V euromark. It is imo the prettiiest rifle made and it comes in 300 roy. That should cover most of yer hunting unless u got plans to go to the dark continent. Buy what your gut tells you it usually isnt wrong!

Well everyone i appreciate all the feedback on this firearm but its finally been purchased.

I am now the owner of a Sako 85 bavarian in 7mm rem mag, i have the one without the iron sights and i just finished putting on a new vortex viper scope in 4x16x50mm.

It's one sweet looking rifle and i absolutely love the action on this thing.

Thanks for all the help
